There hasn’t been a better time to go vegan in Australia. According to research conducted by Roy Morgan, Australia is one of the top countries in the world where Google searches for ‘vegan’ are booming. In particular, these searches originate from South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.
Vegan Australia has also reported an interesting statistic when it comes to vegan groceries in Australian supermarkets. For example, national retailer Woolworths is increasing its vegan offerings by 55% annually.
Australia is the perfect country to explore a vegan lifestyle
If we look at those states where vegan searches are so popular, they’re states that are synonymous with the vegan lifestyle.
Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, hosts its Vegan Festival each year and has premiered its first vegan film festival in 2021. In Victoria, Melbourne is the third most vegan-friendly city in the world and the Gold Coast is touted as Queensland’s vegan heartland. Another state that’s booming for vegan choice is New South Wales; Sydney is fourth in world rankings for vegan-friendly cities.
It also helps when one in three people are already eating vegetarian or actively reducing meat. A vegan lifestyle helps people explore the meat-free, animal-free lifestyle further.
Perceptions are changing in the mainstream, too
In 2021, veganism is emerging more in the mainstream than ever before. Listen to the radio or TV reports on any given day and you may hear a small selection of vegan stories. In addition, Network 10 launched the vegan TV cooking show ‘Freshly Picked’ this year. Furthermore, vegan chefs are emerging to show Australians how easy it is to veganise cultural, family favourites like Chef Na of Chef Na’s Plant-Based Kitchen or Nadia Fragnito of The Vegan Italian Kitchen.
When you’re out and about, visit your local restaurant, café or pub and you’ll find small separate vegan menus or vegan options are emerging. As a result, businesses are meeting a demand that’s there and rapidly increasing.
So why are perceptions changing? Why are they changing now?
Studies continue to emerge about the health risks that are linked to meat consumption. For example, EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health was the first full scientific review into food worldwide that involved 37 world-leading scientists recently. The commission found that unhealthy diets were the leading risk of disease worldwide and a move towards plant-based eating was recommended. In addition to scientific research, we’re seeing an increase in health professionals publishing books, websites and news pieces to communicate the benefits of a plant-based diet. The majority suggest a wholefood plant-based diet that’s vegan is the best way to reap these benefits.
